Losing weight is not for the faint of heart. It takes will power, courage, knowledge and (I believe) inspiration to scale that mountain.
Let’s talk about inspiration. I am going to borrow some of the inspiration of one of my clients to share with you.
Kim is a delight to train. Frequently, she comes in and talks about a new window that has opened to her along her journey of weight loss. They all have to do with new awareness, insight and inspiration. So, as she does bicep curls or pedals away on the bike, telling me her latest inspiration, I write it down on a post-it, asking her if I may share that with another client. Some of them are uniquely hers and some are quotes she has found of others that she has made her own.
The making of these bits of wisdom her own is the key here. I hope you will borrow these thoughts and make them your own too.
“If it’s not hunger, food won’t feed it.”
You will only feel satisfied during the few minutes that you are eating. As soon as you are done eating, the hunger returns, and then the guilt. Before you head for the refrigerator, take a few minutes to feel where the hunger is really based and then address that place. It’s probably not your stomach. Talk with someone about it. Journal about it. Walk and think about it. The answer is not in the cookie jar!
“Whether you think you can or can’t, you are right.”
This is the self-fulfilling prophecy thing we all do. Our thoughts guide and shape our actions. It is important to be aware of your self-talk. Since it has such power, why not turn it in your favor.
“Plateaus are a place to reflect.”
When Kim hit a weight loss plateau, she was frustrated, like everyone who gets stuck on one. Then she remembered hiking with her family on vacation. On the hike a plateau was welcomed by her, giving her a place to rest, to think about the path she had hiked and to enjoy the place where she was now. It also gave her a place to anticipate the path ahead of her. By remembering her hiking plateaus she was more at peace with her weight loss plateau.
